A Broad Design Scheme With Wine Cellars

May 13, 2010 By: guest Category: Food and Drink

Wine cellars aren’t the same thing as refrigerators, if you really want to get into correct definitions. But the wine refrigerators that have come into existence in recent years have adopted the name of those traditional underground rooms or caves because they have been created to serve much the same purpose as the original cellars; the storage and preservation of wine.

But as you recognize how elaborate refrigerators of this nature have now become, you almost don’t even want to call them refrigerated cellars any more, because they have evolved into genuine pieces of furniture.

Even in a regular kitchen setting, you find that many of these refrigerated cellars fit right into the decor as furniture. They may have panels of the same wood as the cabinetry, making them look as though they are part of the broad design scheme of the kitchen.

They might match the surfaces of the larger appliances. But even the windows of these wine refrigerators may add decorative elements, like frosted glass or sometimes even lattice work. They also don’t necessarily just sit in a kitchen looking useful.

However, it’s when you find these refrigerated cabinets looking indeed like cabinets, which may be in upright or credenza styles that the “furniture” aspect really comes into its own. Being larger units, they sometimes hold many hundreds of bottles of wine, so they are favored by those with serious collections.

These wine cellars are usually crafted from polished wood with ornate tinted glass doors. Americave and Vinotheque both have several different collections from credenza size to cabinets resembling armoires.

You can also find furniture like the Edgemont Wine Cellar Tower, with an 18-bottle fridge in the base and a display area above, where wine glasses are hung from the upper level.

Wine cellars have come a long, long way since they began as cave-like rooms underground. Having now brought the storage of wine upstairs, the new built in wine refrigerator have developed into pieces of furniture that can be admired not just for their function but also for their form.

They are no longer merely utilitarian, even if they continue to store wine safely for long periods. As well as preserving wine, they are also being used as actual furniture, standing with other pieces as important elements in the design scheme of the entire home.
