IVF –

IVF, also known as In Vitro Fertilization, it is a fertilization process where sperm is combined with an egg outside the human body, in a glass (which is why “in vitro”). This process involves observing, monitoring and stimulating the ovulation in a woman, then removing an egg from the ovaries of the woman and letting them be fertilized by a sperm in laboratory conditions. The fertilized egg is then incubated for a few days, for about two to six days after which the embryo is transferred to the uterus of the same or another woman with an expectation of having a successful pregnancy.

IVF has proven to be a boon for many couples who have been suffering from infertility or have had multiple miscarriages.

Advantages-

  • Helps patients who are suffering from damaged or/and blocked fallopian tubes. It helps the couple in having their biological child rather than choosing the option of donated sperm or egg.
  • IVF treatment is considered to be the most reliable and successful one. In addition, it has a good track over the records.
  • The treatment is suitable for the same-sex couples and for a single woman.
  • It is also helpful in identifying fertilization problems.

Disadvantages-

  • Most insurance plans do not cover the costs of an in vitro fertilization treatment and one cycle of IVF can cost you a very hefty amount.
  • Results may not be always positive. There is no assured guarantee of IVF success.
  • There is a chance of a multiple pregnancies, that is, the birth of more than one baby if fertility treatment is used. Multiple pregnancies have a chance of premature delivery or low weight of the baby after birth.

The other fertility treatment is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). This one is a very popular treatment used for male infertility.

Advantages-

  • Males suffering from infertility which includes decreased sperm count or poor sperm motility (movement) and morphology (shape)
  • Unsuccessful IVF results
  • Physical blockage

Disadvantages-

  • A possibility of the fertilized egg not getting appropriately in the embryo
  • A possibility of embryo growth ceasing after injecting the sperm
  • ICSI may affect a few healthy eggs and the male infant born through ICSI may get the symptoms of infertility passed on by the father of the progeny.

So, there are both pros and cons of opting for fertility treatment. However, when performed in well-equipped super-speciality hospitals and under expert gynaecologist in Bangalore the chances of success are always high.
